Podiatry and Nail Care with HCHA

by Kennedy Tesch

Taking care of your feet is important at any age. Proper foot care can prevent serious health problems such as infections or deformities. Arthritis, broken bones/fractures, bunions, diabetic foot problems, flat foot, ingrown toenails, plantar fasciitis, sprains, and trauma are all issues that can warrant medical attention to be treated properly.

Podiatry concerns at HCHA are treated by Dr. Prusa with Avera Orthopedics and nail care is provided by Jenna Peterson, HCHA RN and Outpatient Coordinator, and Sarah Citterman, HCHA RN. Julie Nelson, HCHA Home Care LPN, also provides nailcare by appointment.

“Foot health isn’t often made a priority, but is extremely important to one’s overall health,” said Jenna Petersen.

Taking care of your feet is crucial in infection prevention, early recognition of circulation issues, and the overall health of feet and skin.

It is important to seek medical attention for foot care if it becomes challenging or difficult to perform care independently or you have or are experiencing thickened nails, diabetes, open wounds, or other infections.

Nail care services provided at HCHA include the assessment of circulation, sensation, skin and shoes as well as education on daily care, footwear selection, foot precautions and exercise. Treatments include toenails clipped/filed, debridement of thickened nails, corns and calluses.

Patients usually return for routine nail care every two to three months. Although anyone qualifies for nail care assistance at HCHA, it is important to note that not all foot care treatments are covered by insurance and may require out of pocket payment.  You can always check with your insurance prior to making the decision to utilize this service.
